A man was injured during a police-involved shooting in Milton on Wednesday evening.

Around 9:46 p.m., officers with the Milton and Farmington Police Departments, as well as troopers with New Hampshire State Police, responded to a residence on Elm Street, which is near the Maine border. Authorities were dispatched after a resident called 911, according to the attorney general’s office.

Officers found Ryan Cantwell, 36, barricaded in his car “armed with what appeared to be a handgun,” according to the attorney general’s office.

One or more of the responding officers fired at Cantwell during their interaction, injuring him. He is now receiving treatment. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.

Authorities released little further information about the incident. The identity of the officers involved will not be disclosed until formal interviews have been completed, according to the attorney general’s office.

Officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting, and the attorney general office’s investigation will involve a review of that footage.

The attorney general’s office investigates every use of deadly force by law enforcement and almost always rules that they are legally justified.

This is the fifth officer-involved shooting to take place in New Hampshire this year. Another man was injured by police in Milan last week, and three people died during interactions with police last month in Raymond, Northfield and Ashland.
