This week marks National Women’s Health Week and should serve as a reminder to all that 1 in 5 women has turned to Planned Parenthood at some point in her life for affordable, high-quality health care and compassionate, confidential information and advice.
I can’t help but think about how access to comprehensive health care could easily be taken away by Sen. Kelly Ayotte or GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Both of these candidates have supported efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, undermine Roe v. Wade, and repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would eliminate health care coverage for nearly 50,000 New Hampshire residents.
When I was three years old I was diagnosed with a chronic gastrointestinal disease called ulcerative colitis. One of the worst side effects of this disease is an increased risk of blood clotting. For this reason, I am unable to use any form of hormonal birth control because of their proven tendency to increase a person’s risk of blood clots and stroke. The non-hormonal IUD, Paragard, is the only contraceptive method available for me.
Sen. Ayotte’s out-of-touch record on women’s health would jeopardize affordable access to a wide range of contraceptives, some that are medically necessary, and would leave women like me with few choices.
I’ve had enough of politicians putting up roadblocks to health care. New Hampshire residents need real solutions – Kelly Ayotte and Donald Trump don’t have them.
