Hassan’s hypocrisy

In the paper last weekend, there was a story about Hassan’s commencement address at New England College where she urged the class of graduates to stay in New Hampshire (Sunday Monitor Local & State, May 15).

This is pretty hypocritical coming from someone who spent almost half of April outside of New Hampshire for political travel. If Gov. Hassan wants young people to stay in New Hampshire, she should have stuck around to take on the challenges facing the Granite State. Instead, Hassan has gone missing on the issues young people care about.

Young people want to live somewhere that offers opportunity and the ability to get good-paying jobs. But Gov. Hassan hasn’t followed through on that goal, especially given her strident opposition to reasonable reforms to the business tax structure that would make it easier for companies to invest, grow and hire more workers.

She is missing an economic development plan, one which she had promised for over three years. If she is so committed to getting young people to stay, she should start by keeping her promises: Stay at the state house and create an economic development plan.
