Sophie Dlugosz was presented with the Boston Post Cane Award and a Town of Hooksett pin by Hooksett Town Administrator Dean Shankle and Councilor Marc Miville at St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Manchester, where she resides. Present were her children, grandchildren and numerous friends.
Dlugosz turned 99 years old April 23 and has lived in Hooksett since she married her husband, Rudolph, in 1941. Together they owned and operated R.J. Dlugosz Oil in Hooksett and sold apples to many residents from trees at their home on Martins Ferry Road. She has been involved in the community and served as a member of the Grange, Hooksett Women’s Club and the Hooksett-ites.
Her name is currently on a plaque in the lobby of the Hooksett town offices where the cane is displayed.
The Boston Post Cane presenting tradition dates back to the turn of the century when 700 canes were made for New England towns by the former Boston Post newspaper.
