The Pittsfield soccer teams opened play on Saturday at home and combined to score an astounding 10 goals as the girls’ team beat Groveton, 7-3, and the boys’ team finished in a 3-3 draw with Groveton.
Kira Wood and Lyndsey Massey each scored two goals for the Pittsfield girls’ team and Kianna Vincelette had a goal and two assists. Alyssa Sullivan and Katie Rollins had a goal apiece while Wood and Sullivan also added assists.
Kylee Morel, Jojo Wood and Bryanna Morris anchored the defense for the Panthers.
“It’s a great way to start the season. They played very unselfish and we were able to move the ball around and create many opportunities,” Pittsfield girls’ Coach Jayme Kennedy said.
Cam Darrah scored two goals for the Pittsfield boys’ team in the first 12 minutes of the match but had to miss the remainder of the half with an injury. Groveton tied things at 2-2, but Garrett Guerrero-Hadley headed home a cross from Gabe Anthony in the 37th minute to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead going into halftime.
Groveton netted the equalizer in the 71st minute and the two teams played a pair of scoreless overtime periods.
GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY
MV fourth
Key players: MV – Kristie Schoffield, Luaren Rouse, Kaityln Covell, Emma York, Noelle Colarusso
Highlights/key moments: Schoffield finished first overall by more than a minute to win her third straight Great Glen Invitational and lead the Pride to a fourth-place team finish. Rouse was next for MV, finishing 15th. Covell (25th), York (34th) and Colarusso (36th) all ran extremely well in their first high school cross country meet.

Key players: MV – David Reynolds, Matt Reynolds, Dylan Guinard, Taylor Burke, Raging River Lynch
Highlights/key moments: David Reynolds was fourth overall at the Great Glen Invitational to lead the Pride to a ninth-place team result in the 12-team meet. Matt Reynolds was 26th, Guinard 57th, Burke (in his first high school cross country meet) 75th and Lynch 84th.
