Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan wrote to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday urging the federal agency to quickly consider generic versions of the EpiPen, an allergy shot that is becoming more expensive.

The maker of the device, Mylan N.V., recently hiked the price, sparking public outrage. In response, the company said Monday it would begin selling a less expensive generic version.

Hassan, who is running for U.S. Senate, said many residents expressed concern about the price spike.

“I strongly encourage the FDA to accelerate its review and work to ensure that safe and affordable generic versions of EpiPen are able to come to market as quickly as possible,” she wrote.
