The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday that starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz would start the season on the 10-day disabled list with a left forearm flexor strain.

The team said the left-hander may still be able to make his first scheduled start of the season but thatโ€™ll depend on a spring training tuneup on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

โ€œItโ€™s become more and more clear to us that heโ€™s not ready to begin the season,โ€ Manager John Farrell said Thursday, adding that the 28-year-old could start the sixth game of the season April 9 in Detroit.

Pomeranz was acquired via trade last season from the San Diego Padres for heralded pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza.
