Concord

Division: I

Coach: Hayden Daly (14th year)

Last year: Girls: 7th

Top Returners: Girls: Grace Devanny, so., sprints; Yelena Beausoleil, sr., throws; Jennika Mannesto, sr., distance; Stephanie Oberg, sr., throws; Katelyn Jelley, so., sprints; Ennosen Yen, so., jumps; Gillian Bennett, sr., sprints; Kat Jepson, jr., jumps; Abagail Hemeon, so., throws

Top newcomers: Girls: Sarah Waite, fr., sprints; Allison Silverstein, fr., distance

Outlook: Girls: The Tide returns most of its competitors from last year’s D-I championship, led by Devanny, who won the 400 and finished third in New England as a freshman. Captains Beausoleil, Bennett, Mannesto and Oberg lead a team that, “for the first time in while will be strong in a lot of events,” according to Coach Daly. Concord has decent experience across most disciplines and are bolstered by a strong freshman class in the sprints. It’s unlikely that anyone will knock off Bedford in its quest for a fifth-straight title, but the Tide definitely have the pieces to improve on its seventh-place finish.

Top newcomers: Boys: Sam Lupinacci, sr., multi; Casper Marott, sr., multi; Jonathan Thorn, so., throws/pole vault

Girls: Raven Barnes, jr. distance; Hannah Daly, sr., distance; Abigail O’Connor, fr, distance

Outlook: Boys: The Bears are a balanced mix of experience and youth. The traditional distance running powerhouse has developed strong athletes that can score in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws. The key to Coe-Brown moving up the D-II ranks will be how quickly the newcomers adjust to a new sport coupled with how much the returnees continue to improve. Both Richards brothers, Spenard, Barbeau, Pratt, Snow and White are returning point scorers from last year’s D-II state meet.

Girls: Graduation hit the Bears hard, but the coaching staff is excited to build a new team that features many athletes brand new to the sport. Pratt, Summer Barnes, Dupuis and McDonough all qualified in the distance events last year and Collins scored in all three of the throwing events.

Teams to beat: Boys: Portsmouth, Trinity, Lebanon; Girls: Lebanon, Souhegan

Outlook: Boys: Kalob, Fowler and Lynch all competed at states last year and also has members of relays turning. Their experience, along with some talented newcomers and an increase in roster numbers bodes well for improvement for the Generals.

Girls: The Generals have a much deeper roster than in past years which should help them be more competitive as a team. Beliveau and Scott qualified for states last year.

Teams to beat: Boys: Souhegan, Trinity, Coe-Brown; Girls: Milford, Souhegan

Girls: Emma York, fr., mid-distance; Addie Hodge, fr., jumps; Theresa Irving, fr., jumps; Cassidy Considine, fr., sprints; Nicole Considine, fr., sprints, Noelle Colarusso, fr., distance

Outlook: Boys: The Pride boys have quietly built up a complete, well-rounded team over the past few years. MV has the ability to compete for the top spots in the hurdles and high jump in Wood (defending 300 hurdle champion, second 110 hurdles) and Baylus (D-II indoor champion. The Pride also has several athletes who can contribute to high-scoring relay teams, a staple of the MV program, and score lesser points across most events. The Pride finished third this past indoor season, an improvement over the previous season, and MV is expecting to continue that trend this outdoor season.

Girls: The girls have one the best distance runners in the division in Kristie Schoffield (second 800, second 1,600, who has the potential to win any event between the 400 and 3,200, one of the best hurdlers in Covell and a deep roster of girls who can pick up points in the jumps, throws and relays. The Pride is in a good position to improve on last year’s finish.

Belmont

Division: III

Coaches: Aaron Hayward (13th year), Scott Clark (3rd year)

Last year: Boys: 4th; Girls: 8th

TOP Returners: Boys: Eli Allman, sr., hurdles/relays; Ian Remenar, jr., hurdles/relays; River Mathieu, jr., sprints/jumps/relays; Adam Sojka, jr., jumps; Brendon Scheffer, jr., throws; Nick Randos, jr., distance; Isaiah Knowlton, sr., distance

Girls: Alexus Day, jr., distance; Emma Chase, sr., distance; Jessica Hutchinson, jr., distance; Jasmine Syed, sr., mid-distance; Alice Riley, so., distance; Kaitlynn Delisle, so., sprints/jumps

Top newcomers: Girls: Sana Syed, fr., sprints/jumps

Outlook: Boys: The Raiders team is expected to be strong with the return of many scoring athletes who contributed to last year’s top-five finish. Allman is the defending 110 hurdles champion and qualified for New Englands in that event in addition to scoring in the 300 hurdles. Remenar finished second in the 300 hurdles. Mathieu is strong in several sprinting and jumping events and Sojka is one of the top returning triple jumpers in D-III. Allman, Remenar and Mathieu are also contributors to strong relay teams. Scheffer is the Belmont’s top thrower and should do well in the shot put while Randos and Knowlton lead the distance runners. Expect the Raiders to be towards the top of the team standings at the D-III state meet.

Girls: The Raiders are led by a strong group of distance runners, including all four members of the 4×800 relay that won the title last year. Day, Chase, Hutchinson and Jasmine Syed formed that squad. Riley won the D-III individual cross country title this past fall and scored in the 1,600 and 3,200 at states last year. Belmont also has some talented newcomers, especially in the sprints and jumps, which the Raiders hope will lift them above last year’s eighth-place spot.

Teams to beat: Boys: Conant, Kearsarge; Girls: Monadnock

Girls: Brenda Xuan, jr., distance; Emily Finnegan, jr., sprints/jumps

Top newcomers: Boys: Oscar Miller, fr., distance

Girls: Anna Grafton, jr., distance

Outlook: The Green Giants are down in numbers, but have some strong individual competitors. For the boys, Sullivan is aiming to defend his state title in the discus, while the girls have some competitive distance runners.

Bow

Division: III

Coach: Jon Uhouse (3rd year)

Last year: Boys: tied 11th

TOP Returners: Boys: Mike Perry, sr., jumps; Brian Bushnell, jr., sprints; Chandler Evans, sr., sprints; John Rolla, jr., hurdles/jumps

Outlook: Boys: The Falcons return a strong core of state qualifiers from last season, including Bushnell (fifth 100, fourth 200), Perry (fifth triple jump, high jump) and the majority of the third-place 4×100 relay. Bow has plenty of experience in the sprints, distance and jumping events, which will guide the influx of underclassman on the squad. The freshman class looks strong coming off two successful seasons as a middle school team.

Franklin

Division: III

Coach: Derrick Wong (1st year)

Last year: Boys: tied 21st; Girls: did not score

TOP Returners: Boys: CJ Gaslin, so., throws/sprints/jumps; Jacob Weaver, so., hurdles/jumps/mid-distance; David Girtman, jr., hurdles/sprints; Cody Jones, jr., hurdles/jumps/throws; Christian Shepard, jr., hurdles/jumps/distance; James Steele-Graffeo, sr., sprints/hurdles/jumps; Paul Dunham, sr., distance; Giovanni Lemon, sr., jumps/hurdles/sprints

Girls: Emma LaPierre, fr., hurdles/sprints

Outlook: Coach Wong is inheriting a program with a strong base in the throwing events thanks to the efforts of former coach Jeff Kaplan. “We are a small but very capable team with a great group of student-athletes with diverse abilities,” Coach Wong said. “Everyone has bought into the direction I’ve set forth for this program and is excited to show what they can do. We’re looking to continue our excellence in the throwing events while becoming a well-rounded program with strong performances in all the running distances as well as the various jumping events.”

Teams to beat: Inter-Lakes, Belmont, Bow

Hillsboro-Deering

Division: III

Coach: Susan Else (10th year)

Last year: Boys: did not score; Girls: did not score

TOP Returners: Boys: Brandon Rodier, sr.; Parker Noyes, sr.; Brandon Plante-Dupont, sr.; Logan Putnam, jr.; Zachary Camp, so.; Brett Edsall, so.

Girls: Emily Gibson, sr.; Shannon Thomes, sr.; Gabriela Sirmones, jr.; Samantha Grondin, jr.

Top newcomers: Boys: Reed Cullen, sr.; Ben Ketterer, fr.; Trajan Davis, fr.

Girls: Kiersten Clough, sr.; Adanja Minard, so.; Lily Gibson, fr.; Caitlin Green, fr.

Outlook: The Hillcats didn’t get any points at states last year, but “they have worked hard this preseason and I expect they will be very competitive,” according to Coach Else. The boys look especially good in the sprints and throwing events, while the girls have some strong individuals in the field events.

Hopkinton

Division: III

Coaches: Rob Rothe (1st year), John Miner (1st year)

Last year: Boys: D-III runner-up; Girls: 14th

TOP Returners: Boys: Simon Doneski, jr., distance; Kevin McGrath, jr., jumps; Max Rossignol, jr., mid-distance

Top newcomers: Boys: Dan Miner, fr., jumps; Dan Rinden, fr., throws; Connor Barkie, fr., throws

Girls: Emma Rothe, fr., distance; Lily Sabol, fr., mid-distance/hurdles; Littlie Presti, fr., sprints/jumps

Outlook: The Hawks are rebuilding this season after losing the majority of last year’s boys’ team to graduation, including Nick Fleury (won the 100, 200, 400 and long jump last year) and Dom Repucci (won 3,200, second in 800 and 1,600) who combined for 66 of Hopkinton’s 99 points in its runner-up season. This year’s squad is led by McGrath, who qualified for states in all three jumping events and finished second in the high jump, and Doneski, who qualified in the 3,200 and finished second this past cross country season. The girls don’t return any qualifiers from last season. Both squads are bolstered by a strong freshman class that includes Rothe, who was fourth in D-III cross country and the D-IV individual Nordic freestyle champion.

Teams to beat: Kearsarge

Kearsarge

Division: III

Coach: Ed Rehor (20th year)

Last year: Boys: D-III champions; Girls: tied 14th

TOP Returners: Boys: Craig Berube, sr.; Carl Betz, sr.; Hunter Burns, jr.; Grant Croft, sr.; John Cunningham, jr.; Josh Delaurier, jr.; Alex Kalpakgian, jr.; Sam Kulacz, jr.; Jacob Lipscomb, jr.; Eric Scheuch, sr.; Andrew Shepherd, sr.; David Wallace, sr.; Elijah Westerberg, sr.

Girls: Maddie Cook, sr.; Caela Budd, jr.; Hayden Keene, jr.; Maggie Lee, sr.; Kasey Lipscomb, sr.; Maddie Nielsen, sr.; Megan Roy, so.; Avril Prak, so.; Cerys Wheatley, jr.

Top newcomers: Boys: Ben Boulton, so.; Ben Corbyn, so.; Rex Jenna, jr.; Mason Kucharski, jr.; Tom Lick, so.; Gavin Magistro, fr.; Ethan Ryder, sr.; Michael Salo, sr.; Daniel Simek, fr.; Isaac Stearns, so.; Sam Swanson, fr.

Girls: Marliese Baer, fr.; Jenna Bears, fr.; Erin Berger, fr.; Bee Chambers, sr.; Cailyn Dezotell, so.; Mya Dube, fr.; Lela Henskens, sr.; Mary Meagher, fr.; Lydia Pinard, jr.; Amber Spillane, fr.; Emina Wesoja, fr.

Outlook: Boys: It will be a tall order for the Cougars to defend their crown and win their fourth championship in five years without the likes of Troy Davis and Zach Astle. Davis (jumps) and Astle (throws) combined for 52 of Kearsarge’s 119 points last year at the D-III State Meet, but Coach Rehor still thinks the Cougars will be competitive. Croft and John Cunningham finished second and third in the pole vault last year and lead a strong contingent in that event. Croft, a decathlete in the offseason, could potentially score in other events as well. Tim Cunningham, Betz, Burns and Shepherd are part of a strong distance team that formed a major part of the runner-up D-III cross country team this past fall. Berube, Kalpakgian, Magistro and Westerberg will be competitive in the sprints and jumps.

Girls: The Cougars are looking for results from a strong group of distance runners, led by Lee and Cook, to help improve over last year’s 14th-place finish. Roy will lead the throws and Nielsen is a strong leader in the sprints and jumps.

Teams to beat: Boys: Belmont, Inter-Lakes, Monadnock, White Mountains; Girls: Monadnock, White Mountains, Bow, Campbell

Laconia

Division: III

Coach: Jacob Tivey (1st year)

Last year: Boys: tied 23rd; Girls: 11th

TOP Returners: Boys: Ben Beliveau, jr., throws; Thomas Bastis, jr., jumps/sprints; Logan Brough, sr., distance; Dan Engelsen, jr., distance; Joseph Lennon, so., distance

Girls: Morgan Gamans, sr., sprints; Delia Cormier, jr., distance; Victoria Dean, jr., sprints; Taylor Lovely, sr., jumps/hurdles

Top newcomers: Boys: Noah Mousseau, fr., distance/jumps; Eric Phelps, fr., distance

Girls: Avy Bartlett, fr., jumps/sprints; Destiny Jones, so., jumps/hurdles

Outlook: Coach Tivey inherits a program that has returning qualifiers on both the boys’ and girls’ side. For the girls, Cormier (distance, high jump), Gamans (sprints), Lovely (long jump) and members of the scoring 4×100 and 4×400 relays are returning. For the boys, Bastis is a returning qualifier in the hurdles as are most members of the 4×100 and 4×400.

Newfound

Division: III

Coach: Boys: Michael LaPlume (4th year); Girls: Charles Therriault (3rd year)

Last year: Boys: 5th; Girls: tied 19th

TOP Returners: Boys: Shawn Huckins, so.; Libby Matthew, so.; Tiellar Mitchell, so.; Leo Ntourntourekas, sr.; Justin Shokal, so.; James Shokal, jr.

Girls: Mackenzie Brunt, jr.; Megan Gebhardt, sr.; Becky Norton, sr.; Breana Shepard, sr.; Megan Stafford, so.

Top newcomers: Boys: Mason Dalphonse, so.; Brad MacDonald, jr.; Ryan Towne, sr.

Girls: Amy Combs, fr.; Riley Pierce, fr.; Victoria Steele, sr.

Outlook: Boys: The Bears finished in D-III scoring all of their points in the field events. Ntourntourekas finished fourth in the shot put and has put in a lot of work in the offseason to improve in that event. Coach LaPlume is also excited about a strong sophomore class that should form a strong 4×100 relay and perform well in the 300 hurdles and jumps.

Girls: This year’s team will be led by a strong group of throwers. Norton, Brunt and Gebhardt all competed in the shot put last year at states. Coach Therriault is especially excited about Norton’s chances in the discus and Alexis Raimondi in the javelin and expects that Newfound will place higher than 19th at this year’s championship.

Teams to beat: Boys: Kearsarge, Inter-Lakes, Belmont; Girls: Monadnock, White Mountains, Bow

Winnisquam

Division: III

Coaches: Jodi Fredette (19th year), Melisa Morse (17th year), Christine Cochran (1st year)

Last year: Boys: 6th; Girls: 6th

TOP Returners: Boys: Kyle Mann, Tyler Mann, Scott Hinds, Logan Morrison, Logan Krause, Jesse Fredette, Derek DeSousa, Nathan Kierstead

Girls: Olivia Doubleday, Hannah Blackburn, Jasmine Piper, Phoebe Keck, Mackenzie Snow, Mackenzie French, Rebekah Persson, Riley Toupin, McKayla Toupin, Sarah Seymour, Gabrielle Castrillon, Meghan Fife

Top newcomers: Boys: Nathan Houghton, Brennan Dunn, Jack Richard, Gunner Honerman, Kobe Briand

Girls: Jasmine Gove, Casey Lang, Shannon Goodwin, Anna Lindbloom, Samantha Goodridge, Julia Connelly, Gabrielle Isabelle, Illiajana Markelic, Miranda Coffey, Callista Batar

Outlook: Boys: There are only 13 boys on the Bears’ roster, but what Winnisquam lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Mid-distance and distance events seem to be the strongest disciples for the Bears thanks to the return of senior Hinds (third 400), sophomore Kyle Mann (400, 3,200) and the majority of last year’s scoring 4×400.

Girls: The Bears finished sixth behind 34 points from Jaila Remillard, who graduated last spring. Doubleday qualified in the shot put and javelin and leads a strong throwing contingent. Throwing is the strength of a squad filled with newcomers. Keck qualified in the 200 and leads a group of runners that is hoping to put together some competitive relays.
