Franklin softball catcher Anna Doherty swatted five home runs, including a grand slam, to help the Golden Tornadoes plate 44 runs in a pair of wins and earn the Monitor Player of the Week award.
Doherty enjoyed a career week, getting things started with a home run and a grand slam in Franklin’s 25-1 shellacking of Somersworth on April 17 and picking right up where she left off during Wednesday’s win. The senior followed up with a 4-for-5 performance, blasting three more homers to go along with five RBI in a 19-0 blanking of Raymond.
With Doherty’s presence in the lineup and experience behind the plate, Franklin is off to a 3-0 start and outscoring its opponents 49-2 on the season.
Doherty’s performance was good enough to beat out Pittsfield baseball team’s Casey Clark (6-for-8, eight RBI, grand slam), Merrimack Valley’s Kaitlyn Covell (first in both hurdle events at MV Invitational), Hopkinton softball team’s Megan Blanchette (complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts) and Hopkinton boys’ lacrosse team’s Joe Cullinan (10 goals, five assists in 2-0 week) for this week’s award.
