The rain on Tuesday may have washed away most of the high school games scheduled, but it couldn’t cool off the red-hot Hopkinton lacrosse teams, which swept Lebanon by a combined 24 goals.
The girls played on the road and topped the Raiders, 17-6, behind a strong effort from the defense and midfield, which led to good transitions and solid goals.
Lyndon Flanagan led the way with five goals and three assists, while Amelia Bassett also scored five goals and dished two assists. Elle Morrall was solid with two goals, two assists and five draw controls and Fiona Bean chipped in her with her first varsity goal and three draw controls.
Sophia Staples-Roy notched her first varsity goal and dished an asssit, while Chloe Wood (goal, assist), Hannah Wood (goal), Anna Hoffman (goal) and Sofie Locke (goal) also contributed offensively for the Hawks, who have two in a row and visit Kearsarge on May 3.
The boys picked up a 19-6 home victory over Lebanon.
Joe Cullinan led the way offensively with five goals and an assist. Sam Schuster (assist) and Liam Flanagan chipped in three goals apiece and Prince Mansah scored twice.
Hopkinton got out to an 11-2 lead by halftime and the defense, led by Gerry Donahue (seven forced turnovers), Jacob Ashcraft, Carter Haley and Derek Amoth (nine saves), helped slow a run by Lebanon in the second half.
“The game was pretty sloppy because the rain made it difficult to pass and both teams got into penalty trouble. However, we were able to adjust our game play and come up with another big win,” Hopkinton Coach Deacon Blue said. “Lebanon had a lot of good players and were well coached, so we will definitely be watching out for them in the future.”
Henry Yianakopolos and Colby Quiet notched a goal and an assist each for the Hawks (5-0), who visit Campbell on Monday. Hopkinton has outscored its opponents 87-23 through the first five games.
