Save the Everett home

I would like to voice my strong opposition to the rezoning proposal at 297 Pleasant St. in Concord.

Concord Orthopaedics bought the property last October and is asking the city to rezone that area on Pleasant Street, so that it may build a 20,000-square-foot facility and a parking lot.

Few people may realize that the property was owned by Douglas N. Everett’s family. The red structure presently on the property was Everett’s home until his death in September 1996. Douglas Everett was an Olympic hockey star from the 1932 Lake Placid games and is a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. Everett was also my neighbor when I first moved to Concord.

The city of Concord owns the ice arena on Loudon Road that bears his name, and so it does not seem fitting that the city would allow the destruction of Everett’s home and beautifully landscaped property. It is my hope that the city of Concord and the planning board will weigh the historic value of this property before allowing for rezoning.
