In the first major philanthropic event of the year at Concord’s Community College, NHTI is holding a Charity Wiffle Ball Tournament on Sept. 16.
The school is seeking 10-player teams from other colleges, high schools, businesses, families – “whoever wants to have a great time and make a difference in someone’s life while doing it.” Games begin at 9 a.m. and are scheduled every hour throughout the day, both outdoors on the campus quad (weather permitting) and indoors in the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center Gym. With each team trying to score as many runs as possible in three, five-minute innings, the pace of the tourney is frantic and sure to be a great time.
There will be plenty of refreshments for players, and also raffles and a silent auction during the day. The Wiffle Ball Tournament is an annual fundraiser coordinated between NHTI and Community Bridges, a local nonprofit agency that supports people with disabilities and their families. This year’s tournament will benefit a local 13-year-old girl named Monica who was diagnosed with autism at age eight. Funds are raised by team registration fees and a silent auction held during the tournament. (The registration fee is $100 from the team members, matched by $100 from a business sponsor.) Local businesses are also contributing food for the tournament, gift certificates, other auction items, and cash. The event is open to the public; admission is by donation. All proceeds will directly benefit Monica. For more information, please contact the Student Life office at 230-4045 or nhtistudentlife@ccsnh.edu.
Have you heard news stories about invasive insects threatening New Hampshire’s trees and forests? Are you concerned about trees on your property or in your community?
On Sept. 7, a volunteer from the Speaking for Wildlife Program will present “N.H. Bugs: The Big Three” at 9:30 a.m. at the Weare Public Library, 10 Paige Memorial Lane in Weare. This is the library’s monthly Community Coffee; coffee and refreshments will be served. The presentation will focus on three of the insects of greatest concern in New Hampshire: the emerald ash borer, the hemlock woolly adelgid and the Asian longhorned beetle. You’ll learn about where these insects are found, how to recognize an infested tree, how they spread to new locations, and what you can do to help slow the spread. This program is free and open to the public.
For more information on this or other library programs, contact the Weare Public Library at 529-2044, by email at wearepl@comcast.net, or go to wearepl.wordpress.com.
