Committee works to award students

The Executive Committee of the Concord High Class of 1953 warmly thanks class members for another record-breaking scholarship fundraising drive. The class joined earlier this month for its annual reunion and raised $3,080 at that event to add to $200 received in the mail from classmates who could not attend. Prior to its 50th class reunion in 2003, the class regularly donated to the high school’s media center. In 2003 the class voted to raise money for and donate to a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior. Finance committee members, Freda Spiro and Betty Kilgore Hoadley, reported that the scholarship has been raised to two $500 scholarships and gradually to two $1,000 scholarships in the intervening years. Both the general chairman of the dinner reunions and luncheons, Ginger Beck Sanborn of Chichester, and class president Charles Tseckares of Winchester, Mass., congratulated the classmates on their remarkable giving over these many years. The cooperation of Finance Director of the Concord School District, Jack Dunn, and high school vice principal, Steve Rothenberg, was also cited. Class member John Howard reminded his classmates that volunteerism is alive and well in the Capital City area as a number of classmates regularly volunteer with the Friends of the Audi, at the Concord Hospital, and at the Pierce Manse, for example.

Members of the fund-raising committee are Vinalrae Hurd McBride of Concord, Lois Enos Cronin and Janice Drewry Locke, both of Bow and Jim Cleveland, of Concord. Ted Sanborn of Chichester has long provided organizational assistance. This year Lucille Morin Stevens of Rochester joined the Hospitality Committee. Her husband, Karl Stevens, serves as the volunteer photographer.

Three classmates were recognized for coming the farthest distances to attend the luncheon: Jane Crowell Eads from Portland, Ore.; Dr. Frank Sargent from Durham, N.C.; and Bob Sanquistfrom Wethersfield, Conn. All three brought accompanying family members. Thirty classmates attended the luncheon and another 16 spouses, partners, children, and grandchildren attended as well. The luncheon in 2018, class reunion number 65, will be held at the Makris restaurant on Route 106 on the third Wednesday in August.
