Charming, freckle-faced, bright-eyed Chippa Granite appeared on posters, signs and brochures all over the country in the 1950s, beckoning tourists to enjoy all that New Hampshire had to offer.
The creation of artist Alice Cosgrove, Chippa was chosen by the New Hampshire State Planning and Development Commission in 1953 to promote winter sports but was quickly adopted to promote all kinds of New Hampshire products.
Whether skiing, drinking milk or visiting a farm, Chippa became a friendly symbol of New Hampshire tourism and agriculture.
As the official state artist, Cosgrove designed many other works of art for the state of New Hampshire, including a postage stamp featuring the Old Man of the Mountain and the New Hampshire Marine Memorial at Hampton Beach.
