Commission fails the people, coyotes

Once again the “out of touch” Fish and Game Commission members turned a deaf ear to the will of the people, their own senior scientist and compelling scientific research.

A well thought out and researched proposal to shorten the hunting season for coyotes was opposed by the commission. Members claimed that there was no scientific research (despite the fact that the research was provided to them), that coyotes were not endangered and that they wouldn’t change year-round hunting for coyotes based on petitions and “emotions.” They didn’t read the public emails that came to Fish and Game supporting the change. Their own unreasonable bias showed through during the meeting with comments such as “they operate in packs; they are a vicious predator.”

I guess it’s okay for them to show emotion, no matter how irrational. The commission has no empathy for the wild animals they are charged to oversee.

Animals, that are thinking, feeling, sentient beings are nothing more than commodities of fur, meat and the object of “recreational killing.” The commission needs to change from these hardcore, unreasonable hunters to a more diverse group of people (biologists, ecologists, animal welfare representatives, forestry experts, etc.) who truly care about New Hampshire’s wildlife and will listen and be receptive to science and public opinion on these matters.

They are supposed to represent “us,” the people. But they care about and listen to only a small group of hunters and trappers. It’s time for a change.
