The Manchester Monarchs allowed three goals in the third period in a 5-2 loss on the road to the Wheeling Nailers. Wheeling (34-27-8-1) opened the scoring 4:56 into the game, but Keegan Iverson scored 40 seconds later to tie the game, 1-1. The Nailers scored a short-handed goal at 17:24 to give Wheeling a 2-1 lead through the first period. After a scoreless second, the Nailers rattled off three straight tallies to open the third, before Spencer Watson netted a power-play goal to complete Manchesterโs scoring. Despite the loss, the Monarchs (40-22-3-3) still are on top of the ECHL North Division with 86 points.
Newbury native and Kearsarge graduate Zach Astle and Gilford resident Emily Wernig were among nine throwers on the University of New Hamphire track and field team to compete in the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina to open the spring season. Astle, a sophomore, finished seventh out of 25 in the menโs shot put with a toss of 52 feet, ยพ inches. Teammate Michael Shanahan, a senior from Dover, won the hammer throw and set a school record with a toss of 224-3. His winning throw is currently No. 8 in the nation. Jon Champman finished 10th in the hammer throw. Wernig, a senior, finished 25th out of 42 in the womenโs hammer throw and 35th in the discus.
The University of New Hampshire womenโs lacrosse team defeated Hartford, 17-0. Carly Wooters matched her career-high with four goals to lead a balanced attack. Krissy Schafer and Michele Smith both scored three goals. The Wildcats are 2-0 in America East and 4-6 overall.
The Colby-Sawyer womenโs lacrosse team defeated Thomas College, 19-2. Junior Sierra Schuster of Hopkinton scored four goals and freshman Talia Dinger of Penacook scored two. Senior Nicole Lavigne led the Chargers with six goals and three assists. Colby-Sawyer improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the North Atlantic Conference.
The Plymouth State softball team swept a doubleheader over Rhode Island College to open Little East Conference play. The Panthers claimed game one, 3-1, and game two, 10-0, in six innings. Caitlyn Miller struck out a career-high 12 batters in game one, while Kayla Mathieu tossed a three-hitter in game two. Concordโs Cassidy Emerson, a junior, scored the first run of game one after reaching base on a triple. Emerson also had two runs, two hits and drew a walk in game two. Pembrokeโs Hannah Seidner, a junior, connected for two hits and two runs in game two. The Panthers are 11-7 overall.
The Plymouth State womenโs lacrosse team defeated UMass-Dartmouth, 17-10, in its LEC opener. Junior midfielder Veronyca Daniels scored three goals and Weareโs Clarissa Foote, a senior, made 24 saves. Megan Tingley led the Panthers with five goals. Plymouth State is 4-3 overall.
The Plymouth State menโs lacrosse team defeated Western Connecticut State in win their LEC opener, 13-9. Chris Waterbury scored four goals to lead the Panthers. Plymouth State is 2-3 overall.
The Plymouth State baseball team opened LEC play with 11-1 and 6-3 victories over UMass-Dartmouth. In game one, Dylan Gaita threw six shutout innings, allowing four hits, and was supported by five runs in the third inning. In game two, the Panthers took a 4-1 lead in the third and David Sampson retired nine straight batters to preserve the lead. Plymouth State improved to 9-5 overall.
The New England College menโs lacrosse team defeated Husson, 13-1, for its sixth-straight win. Weareโs Matt Richard, a senior, scored a goal and added six assists, while Canterburyโs Charles Hacking, a freshman, recorded three goals and an assist. The Pilgrims are 6-4 overall and 3-0 in North Atlantic Conference play.
Junior Tara Bainbridge set the NEC records for most goals in a single game (11) and had three assists for most points in a game (14), lifting NEC to a 23-17 victory over Husson. NEC is 7-2 overall and 4-0 in NAC play.
Bowโs Tom Blandini, a sophomore on the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team, went a combined 5-for-10 with three RBI and two runs in a doubleheader against Bentley. SNHU dropped game one, 4-3, in 12 innings before blasting Bentley in game two, 18-1.
The Concord Coach Lines Squirt 1 team defeated Dedham, Mass., 4-3, in overtime, to advance to the Mass Valley League semifinals. Rowan Arndt scored a hat trick, including the overtime goal, while Carter Doherty scored one. Daniel Commerford, Colby Nyhan and Trevor Craigue provided the assists. Garrett Bishop posted 18 saves in a strong effort between the pipes.
Pembroke Parks and Recreation Adult Yoga classes are being offered and have limited openings. Winnipesaukee Muskrats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League are looking for local families to host players for the upcoming summer season. Players typically range from 19-22 years of age and will arrive the first week of June and leave the first week of August. Host families are asked to provide a spare room with a bed, access to shower and laundry facilities, and occasional meals for their player โ typically breakfast. Transportation is not required.
