By 9:30 a.m. Friday, Brothers Donuts & Deli Shop in Franklin had sold out of all their donuts.

“This is double what we would normally do today,” said Matt Rizzo, whose father owns the shop. “I didn’t think we would sell out.”

The first Friday of each June marks National Donut Day and to celebrate, donut shops around the country gave free donuts to their customers. Brothers Donuts was no exception, handing a sweet treat to everyone who walked through their doors.

In preparation for National Donut Day, Rizzo’s father arrived Thursday afternoon and worked all through the night, not leaving until early Friday morning. The shop had baked over 200 dozen donuts in preparation.

“We try to make as many as we can in one night,” Rizzo said.

The store opened at 2 a.m. and by 5 a.m. they had already sold 55 dozen donuts, Rizzo said.

On a normal Friday, Rizzo said they would put about 40 dozen donuts on the shelf and a normal Saturday about 80 dozen.

Matt Rizzo’s father started Brothers Donuts with his brother 37 years ago. Rizzo said his father works about 100 hours per week making donuts. The most popular are honey dipped and chocolate glazed.

Brothers Donuts delivers donuts upon request, he said, which makes up a large part of their business. For example, there’s a standing order on Saturdays for 40 dozen donuts to be brought to the Concord Farmers Market.

On Friday, Rizzo said he served about 50 people before leaving for deliveries. When he returned, all the donuts were gone. Rizzo estimated between 100 and 150 walk-in customers were served Friday, each order being given a free donut. Some people came in just for the free donut, he said.

Closing their doors early Friday led to some disappointed customers. Rizzo said not to worry, though.

“We had customers come in after we closed and I told them to come back tomorrow and I’ll still give them a free donut,” he said.
