White Birch Center for Extended Education completed a successful summer camp thanks in part to Osram, parent of Sylvania Automotive located in Hillsboro, which donated $1,550 for STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Math) Kits.

Numerous studies tell us that children who don’t have quality summer programming are more likely to forget what they learned the previous year in school. White Birch summer programming keeps children active and learning throughout the summer.

The Science of Super Powers STEM Kits gave 50 school-aged children in the White Birch Center Summer Camp program 12 hours of hands-on STEM lessons and fun. Biology, engineering, and technology concepts were discussed through the lens of comic book heroes and the amazing real-life creatures many of them were modeled after. Through collaboration and community awareness, campers also identified, and applied, these hero activities to real-life role models. The kits included instructor guides, activity schedules and materials for documentation, recording and reflecting. Also included were creative supplies, informational posters, group discussion tips, background and vocabulary pointers and assessment materials.
