A dog is being credited for saving its owners from a fire that destroyed a Barnstead home.
Emergency responders arrived at 491 Beauty Hill Road in Barnstead on Saturday to find the 1 ½ story home engulfed in flames. A second alarm was quickly called due to the location and distance from an available water source, according to a Barnstead Fire Department press release.
The fire department is crediting the homeowner’s dog with saving the lives of the occupants. The home had no working smoke detectors, and fire personnel say it is unlikely the occupants would have survived otherwise.
Other pets in the house were no so lucky, however, and died in the blaze.
The blaze took an hour and a have to get under control. Two firefighters were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to the press release.
More than 20 towns and agencies provided support at the fire, according to the release.
The home is valued at $250,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
