ConcordN.H. Humanities receives grant

New Hampshire Humanities has received a $15,000 grant from the Lincoln Financial Foundation to support its Connections Adult Literacy program. New Hampshire Humanities adult literacy program Connections brings the best of children’s and young adult literature and New Hampshire Humanities-trained discussion facilitators to more than 500 adult learners each year. Quality books and stimulating discussions promote English language skills, cultivate conversations about ideas, reinforce family literacy, support a culture of reading, and encourage civic engagement. Connections works in partnership with adult basic education and ESOL classes, refugee resettlement organizations, services for adults with developmental disabilities and state and county prisons. Participants are both native speakers and new Americans. “New Hampshire Humanities is deeply grateful for the ongoing support of Lincoln Financial Foundation,” said Anthony Poore, executive director of New Hampshire Humanities. “Literacy is the foundation of success in so many critical aspects of our lives. Connections succeeds because it helps English language learners cultivate skills in reading, critical thinking, conversation, and interviewing, and builds the confidence necessary to succeed in social, civic, and workplace settings.” Lincoln Financial Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Lincoln Financial Group, believes in empowering people to live greater lives, which advances culture and empowers greater positive change. Its grant is part of Lincoln Financial’s annual $10 million investment in its local communities’ youth education, economic and workforce development, human well-being and arts programs.
