The city of Concord has called for back-to-back city-wide parking bans as it braces for 12 to 20 inches of snow expected to fall this weekend.

The bans will take place between midnight until 7 a.m. Sunday and midnight and 7 a.m. Monday.

Parking is available free of charge in the city’s three municipal garages from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. every day in permitted spaces and 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. in metered spaces, regardless of weather.

Parking is always free on the weekends. Because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, parking in the garages will also be free Monday.

“The community’s cooperation to move cars off the street is greatly appreciated to help the plows more efficiently clear snow. Cars not removed from the street can impede snow removal and block plows on narrow streets,” wrote the city’s general services spokesperson, Angelina Zulkic, in an email.

Parking bans are typically called before 4 p.m. the day before they’re expected to kick in because the city wants to be sure enough snow is coming to warrant a ban.

But the forecast leaves little room for doubt – snow is coming.

The storm is expected to begin around 8 p.m. Saturday night, with 9 to 13 inches of snow possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The deluge continues on Sunday, with 3 to 7 inches of snow possible before 8 p.m. Chance of precipitation on both days is 100 percent.
