Concord municipal crews work on the water leak near the intersection of South State and Monroe streets Thursday.

A portion of South State Street was closed Thursday due to a faulty value joint, according to Concord’s general services department.

The leak was discovered early Thursday morning near the South State and Monroe Street intersection, according to a general services spokesperson.

The area between Concord and Downing streets were closed while crews addressed the issue. Detours were in place, and motorists were advised to seek an alternative route. The road is expected to reopen around 5 p.m.

About 47 customers in the area were affected. Everyone’s water was restored around 3 p.m. Thursday; general service’s advised anyone who experiences water discoloration to run their tap until the stream clears.

An aging 14-inch cast-iron pipe was originally believed to be the source of the leak. Both the pipe and the value date back to 1902.
