I am writing in response to the article about using stones instead of sand and salt on roads (Sunday Monitor front page, Feb. 24). It is my experience that stones are not beneficial on our roadways when there is inclement weather. Stones are a mineral and will become frozen when used on roads. This causes the stones and road to be slippery and very dangerous.
Stones can become projectiles and will cause damage to the underside of a car or truck, and also cause damage to the windshield of a car or truck. Stones need to be crushed, and this can be very costly.
Stones caused damage to my husband’s truck when they got lodged in the brakes and started smoking. A trip to the garage verified that there were stones in the brakes that needed to be removed. It was also confirmed that if my husband continued to drive, the truck would have caught fire.
When traveling on North Road there is a small area where the road slopes downward. As I approached the intersection, I could not stop and my car proceeded to go through the light.
Stones do not help when there is snow or ice. Sand and salt are safer, cheaper and will not cause damage to a car or truck.
