Students in technology classes in the fourth-grade at the Henniker Community School recently learned the basics of coding with Technology Integrator Leanne Chauvette using iPads and robots. They then put their coding knowledge to work on a mapping project in their individual classrooms.
Each fourth-grade classroom made a map โ one of the continents, one of the State of New Hampshire and one of a town. The students then researched landmarks to include on their maps and created their classroom map through measurement and artwork.
Once maps were completed, the fourth graders gathered in small groups and chose locations on the map to have their robot move toward. They independently coded the robots to see if they could get them from one location to the other using teamwork and growth mindset. There were times the coding they came up with didnโt work, and then students learned to regroup, discuss, adapt, and try again.
โOur students really enjoyed this project and became very comfortable using the robots and working together,โ said Henniker third- and fourth-grade teacher Stephanie Crowe. โThey were even able to add in some extras such as sounds and lights. We plan to continue to design projects using the robots throughout the year.โ
