I was 5 years old and living with my grandmother next to the store in Danbury in 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps boys would sit on the store steps in the evening and eat candy bars and Table Talk type individual pies, and drink Coke. These were all 5 cents each. The $5 a month they received would go pretty far.
When I was 8 and living in Grafton, the CCC would have boxing matches every Saturday night during the summer. They had an outdoor elevated ring. A local boy would be matched against a CCC boy. The townspeople would turn out to cheer for the local lad.
The CCC boys were all respected and behaved. Those big city fellows must have felt they were in a different country.
