Last week, I was solidly behind Speaker Nancy Pelosi to soft-pedal impeachment while continuing investigations. President Donald Trump’s contempt of Congress has changed my mind.

I believe it is clear we will spend the next 18 months not only watching this president stonewall Congress but also continue to abuse his power and obstruct justice.

I know impeachment may be distraction from the issues, but the alternative is worse. I agree with Joe Biden. I believe eight years of a Trump presidency will be the end of truth, justice and the American way.

2020 will be a key year for the Senate. There are 34 seats up for re-election. Twenty-two of those are Republican-held seats. As I write this, a recent poll shows Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s approval rating in Kentucky is 18% with 74% disapproval.

When impeachment is called for, Republicans are going to have to defend Donald Trump’s words and actions. They will have to explain why the singular major “legislative” action taken during the two years they held complete control of the federal government was a huge tax cut for the wealthiest.

Republicans will be forced to defend why they did nothing on infrastructure, comprehensive immigration reform, ACA replacement and deficit reduction.

Speaker Pelosi made clear there will be no impeachment without a groundswell of support from the grassroots. I am emailing all four members of the N.H. delegation. If you agree, please join me.
