To all the Democrats who are clamoring for impeachment of the president: Stop to think about the possible (likely) outcome.

First, we must assume the House will pass the articles of impeachment. That means the representatives in red and purple districts are willing to potentially jeopardize their re-election in 2020, something many incumbents are fearful of doing.

If the articles do pass the House and are sent along to the Senate, here are the two likely scenarios. First, Mitch McConnell refuses to even bring them to the floor for a hearing, which he has done to almost all of the recent House-passed legislation. Just like the Garland nomination, it goes nowhere despite all the yelling and lawsuits and further damage to our constitutional form of government. The second scenario is potentially even worse. McConnell does bring the articles to the Senate floor, but does not allow evidence to be presented or testimony to be heard. He immediately calls for a vote (voice vote likely), which results, at best, in a 53-47 party-line defeat and the president is exonerated. Imagine the talking points this presents in the 2020 election!

No matter which scenario happens in the House or the Senate, it becomes a win for the president and the Republicans, and potentially boosts their respective chances in 2020 of retaining the White House, the Senate and perhaps even recapturing the House.

Is that what you really want?
