The Craney Hill Fire Tower in Henniker will be open to the public later this month for people who want an aerial view of fall foliage.

The fire tower will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, and Monday, Oct. 14, weather permitting. It can be reached via Craney Hill Road.

The tower is owned by the town, managed by volunteers and supported by private donors. It was given to Henniker in 1980 after being used for more than 40 years as a state-run forest fire lookout.

The first lookout on Craney Hill was established in 1912. In 1932 the N.H. Forestry Commission constructed the current 41-foot-tall tower with a metal 7-by-78-foot cab. Later, a 10-by-10-foot wooden cab was placed on top of it.

In 1997 the tower was going to be torn down to make way for a cell tower, but resident rallied to save it and got it listed on the National Historic Lookout Register.
