First-year players Melita Belt and Emma Rose-Farrell made strong contributions for the Hopkinton Middle School field hockey team during a 3-1 win over Kearsarge. Hadley Cook and Charlotte Presti handled the scoring for the Hawks.
■Alyssa Brodeur and Jules Guertin both scoredt wice for the Merrimack Valley Middle School field hockey team in a 6-1 victory over West Running Brook. Kaiya Mercier finished with two assists, Grace Thompson and Lauren Bailey added one and both Kayla Cole and Julia Michael chipped in with solo goals. Taylor Gionet played well defensively.
Bow knocked off Epping, 2-1, in a New Hampshire Soccer League contest. Bow received strong performances from Gavin Buxton (goal), Blake Crowell (goal), Luke Andrews (defense), Kyle Cimis (defense) and Clayton Nadzan (defense). Sebastian Christie and Cam Czarnosz also chipped in with solid efforts, while Diego Jordan-Foote played well in net.
Southern New Hampshire University sophomore Ashley Corcoran ran the fastest 6K in SNHU program history, placing 12th overall at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh. Corcoran ran the 6K in 21:24.8
UNH junior transfer Elisabeth Danis (Coe-Brown) was the second Wildcat to cross the finish line, taking 30th overall with a new personal best time of 20:35.5 during the women’s cross country race in Bethlehem, Pa. On the men’s side, James Wilkes (Concord) ran to fourth overall with a PR of 24:53.7 in the College Brown 8K race. Alexander Saveliev (Concord) finished 56th with a personal best time of 25:25.9.
■Kayla Paquin (Pembroke Academy) scored her second goal of the season as the New England College women’s soccer team tied Elms College, 1-1.
■Maria Wimpey (Concord) delivered 46 assists and 12 digs for the Plymouth State women’s volleyball team as the Panthers took two matches from Worcester State in a rare non-conference double header in Plymouth.
■The Colby-Sawyer women’s soccer team received help from a pair of locals to get on the scoreboard before falling to Johnson & Wales, 2-1. Midway through the second half, Hannah Marquis (Weare) scored her second goal of the season off a pass from senior Leah Dupuis (Concord). It was a team-leading third assist for Dupuis on the season.
The St. Paul’s School boys’ cross country team defeated Deerfield Academy, 19-39. Clemens Herfarth (16:48) took first, Alex Taylor (17:12) second and Fin Sias (17:56) placed fourth. The JV team also defeated Deerfield, 24-31 behind solid outings for Lon Walton, Lucas Spiro and William Mao.
■Despite 17 of its 21 runners having personal records, the St. Paul’s School girls’ cross country team lost to Deerfield Academy and Winsor School. Caroline Light (21:17) led the squad and was followed by an impresive packing, including Georgia Alessio (22:00), Kate Taylor (22:06), Margaret MacMillan (22:20) and Bristol Fales-Hill (22:34).
■Kaleb Shumway scored the lone goal for the Tilton School boys’ soccer team in a 6-1 loss to Proctor Academy. Logan Ruggles filled in well in goal after Tilton’s starting keeper received a red card.
■The Tilton School varsity football lost to Pingree, 40-8. Owen Snively and Kai Rose played well on both sides of the line.
The Concord Capitals Midget 16U JTD Enterprises faced off against the Western Mass Vipers and lost, 6-3. Zack McCoy netted a hat trick. Aiden Ramshaw, Matthew Wheeler and Jonathan McDonald all added assists. Kalan Gaudreault and Aidan Miller split time in goal.
New Hampshire Tackles Hunger, organized by the New Hampshire Food Bank and WMUR-TV sportscaster Jamie Staton, are once again teaming up to help fight hunger during the high school football season. Fans are asked to bring canned food to specific games this fall as part of the state-wide food drive. John Stark rounds out the local drives on Friday for its game in Weare against Pembroke.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame golf tournament will be held on Saturday at Loudon Country Club. The cost is $400 per foursome, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, post-tournament meal and pre-tournament coffee and muffins.
New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization will induct six former basketball coaches into their first Hall of Fame class on Oct. 13 at The Red Blazer in Concord. Social hour will start at 1:30 p.m., followed by a buffet luncheon. The first class selected by the NHBCO includes: John Fagula (Nashua), Jack Ford (Winnacunnet), Gary Jenness (Groveton and White Mountains), Mike Lee (Farmington), Lang Metcalf (Lebanon) and Danny Parr (Portsmouth). New Hampshire Legends of Hockey 17th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon will be on Oct. 20 at the Grappone Conference Center, in Concord at 11:30 a.m. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include Denis Martin, Freddy Meyer and Deron Quint who are being inducted as players; longtime New England College bench boss Tom Carroll is being inducted as a coach; Rod Ross is being inducted in the media category; and the late Downing Potter “DP” Brown is being inducted posthumously as a builder. Ben Smith will be the keynote speaker. The hockey history of the Alpine Club, which competed in the Granite State Hockey League in the early to mid 60s will also be recognized. 16th Annual NHTI Basketball Coaching Clinic will be held at the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center on the NHTI campus in Concord on Oct. 20. Registration is $45 if registered by Tuesday, or $60 after that day. Coaching staff of three from the same school/program for $100 on or before Tuesday or for $110 after. Clinic topics include (are subject to change) defense to offense transition, developing offense, post play development, developing defensive core, rules interpretation, defending the pick and roll, and quick hitters.
