D-III Boys’ Soccer

No. 3 Mascenic 2, No. 7 Hopkinton 1,
Mascenic wins on PK, 3-2

Key players: Hopkinton – Andrew Beckwith (G), Logan Rockwood (A), Aidan Burns (3 saves)

Highlights: Beckwith scored the match’s first goal in the 22nd minute and the Hawks had a 2-1 advantage through three rounds of penalty kicks, but the Vikings forced overtime with a goal in the 63rd minute and scored in the last two rounds of the shootout to advance to the D-III championship. Beckwith’s goal came on a “monster run and an emphatic finish” from a low angle on the baseline. Mascenic only had one dangerous scoring chance, but made it count. Shea Zina made a long throw-in that Sam Stauffeneker finished to force overtime. Hopkinton ends the season with five losses, but only one of them came in regulation.

Coach’s quote: “Give (Mascenic) enough chances at it, and eventually one is bound to get ya – and it did. Seniors Derek West, Benny Madden and Mike Baer played big minutes for us tonight in the middle of the field against the imposing presence that are the Mascenic center backs and mids, limiting their chances to almost nothing (other than the long throws).” – Hopkinton’s Scott Zipke

Records: Mascenic 17-2; Hopkinton 13-5-1
