NewburyPoetry reading

Marie Harris, New Hampshire Poet Laureate from 1999-04 and Barrington resident, joins the speaker series Snapshots in Time, on Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Newbury Town Offices. Known for her poetry and children’s books, Harris has made a career out of education and promoting literary arts. She has authored five books of poetry, the most recent of which is Desire Lines, the latest volume in the Hobblebush Books Granite State Poetry Series. Desire Lines collects more than a decade’s worth of work including poems commissioned during her tenure as Poet Laureate. Presented by the Literary Guild of the Center for the Arts and the Newbury Public Library, this event showcases Harris’s body of work and gives the audience an opportunity to explore the mind of a poet.

Her books for children include G is for GRANITE: A New Hampshire Alphabet, and Primary Numbers: A New Hampshire Number Book. Her latest children’s book, The Girl who Heard Colors explores synesthesia, a condition which allows people to experience multiple senses, such as perceiving numbers, letters or words in color. The Girl who Heard Colors was named Outstanding Work of Children’s Literature by the N.H. Writers Project in 2016.

In addition to a reading from Desire Lines and at least one of Harris’s children’s books, there will be time for questions from the audience. This event will appeal to all ages, and children and families are encouraged to attend. There will be copies of the books available for sale, and Harris is happy to autograph copies.
