Tori Andrewski sparked the Cougars to start, and Rayna Tucker provided the finishing touches on Monday night in North Sutton.
Andrewski scored eight of her nine points in the first quarter, and Tucker went 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the fourth to help the Kearsarge girls’ basketball team claim a 47-36 win against John Stark.
“We played well tonight,” Kearsarge coach Keith Roberts said. “John Stark is a very physical team and I think we matched that.”
The Cougars improve to 3-0 with the win while the Generals drop to 0-2. With the school district under strict safety guidelines, Stark had just three practices before playing its season-opening game on Saturday against Bow, a 54-22 loss. There was some improvement in this one, but Stark is still well behind most teams.
“It went about as expected. We have a young team and we haven’t had any time to get them ready,” Stark coach Bruce Johnson said. “We executed for a few minutes, but most of the time it was non-existent. The kids are willing to work, they just haven’t been able to.”
And the Generals won’t get any more chances to work this week. Stark athletics are back on pause until Saturday, which means the rematch between these two scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
Behind Andrewski, who also had 13 rebounds, Kearsarge (3-0) took a 13-9 lead after the first quarter on Monday and pushed it to 21-14 by halftime. Caroline Camp then scored seven of her team-high 13 points in the third quarter and Kearsarge was up 33-23 headed to the fourth.
“All the kids really played well tonight with our young players really contributing to the win,” Roberts said.

Key players: Merrimack Valley — Hayley Kenney (13 points), Macy Gordon (7 points), Emily Koufos (7 points), Hadleigh Sargent (11 points); Pembroke Academy — Annelise Dexter (20 points), Britney Hill (9 points)
Highlights: It was another back-and-forth game between these two area rivals. MV had the last possession and Kenney, a senior, made it count with the game-winning free throw.
Coach’s quote: “We struggled offensively early and didn’t do many things well. In the second half we did a better job of rebounding on the defensive end and getting baskets in transition. We played with some energy and toughness and it showed. We will see PA again on Thursday and I’m sure it will be another battle.” — MV’s Bob McNutt
“The fourth-straight game for us that was decided in the final minute. Great effort from both teams. I think the biggest lead was four or five points for either team. Freshman Annelise Dexter has been good in our first three games, but this was her best game not only scoring but setting up her teammates for good chances.” — PA’s Steve Langevin

It is the third time we are playing (Coe-Brown) this year and sometimes that is difficult, but our girls came out and played well. We have a tendency to come out slow in the third quarter, but we didn’t allow that to happen tonight, so it was nice to build on that.” — Brady’s Sal Alosa

We did a pretty decent job defensively, although we did have some defensive breakdowns in the second half that we certainly will have to address before Thursday.
