On May 1 at 7 p.m., Songweavers Women’s Chorus of Concord Community Music School celebrates 30 years of singing together. A virtual spring concert entitled “Joy!” will include interview clips with some women who have sung with the group since the beginning, a poem written for the occasion, a retrospective slide show, a virtual choir, and some sing-alongs. With special guest Carolyn Parrott, the founding Director of Songweavers, the program will span songs from the very first season to songs written to celebrate this momentous anniversary, as well as a duet by Carolyn and the current director, Peggo Horstmann Hodes.
The music will feature Paul Hodes on guitar, Kent Allyn on piano and bass, Emilie Meadows on marimba, a ukulele chorus of Songweavers, and the Songweaver Drummers, co-directed by Grace Schust and Lindsey Schust. Two new songs – one by Songweaver Kathy Lowe, and another written for the occasion by Paul Hodes and arranged by Peggo Horstmann Hodes, will have their public debut.
Singing together on Zoom over the past year has given the Songweavers singing community the gift of connection in this challenging time. We see each other, hear each other, and vibrate in harmony. Songweavers, New Hampshire’s original women’s community chorus, is a program of the Concord Community Music School in Concord. The goal of Songweavers is to build community through singing together, and in particular singing about what binds us together and surpasses our differences. Through music, says Horstmann Hodes, the Songweavers “aim to touch and rekindle our common humanity, without fear, politics, or ideology.”
