For a hands-on math lesson to help students learn about finding the area of parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles, Ms. Burnell turned her 6th-grade classroom at the Henniker Community School into a miniature golf course.
First, students had to find the area of the classroom to determine how many square units each student would be able to have for their own golf hole design.
Once it was determined that each student could have an area of 170 square units to create their hole, students designed their hole using trapezoids, triangles, and parallelograms following the measurement parameters and designed obstacles within their designated area.
Pars were created for holes and then students played their classroom course.
