I can’t figure out if the title of Bill Bunker’s latest letter ( Monitor, 10/6) is meant to be ironic or humorous since what follows is a little of each. Mr. Bunker begins by explaining how our elected representatives in Washington don’t read bills or even write them; apparently, they’re written by lobbyists and special interest groups. I’m not sure what the point of this opening is, other than to suggest that Mr. Bunker himself has read the entire 2,750 pages of the Build Back America bill and knows more about it than we mere mortals do.

He excoriates Democrats for producing the bill and tells us it’s filled with extravagant amounts of spending. I guess Democrats have read the bill, however, since they know what’s in it, and, to quote Mr. Bunker, [they] “are feeding like pigs at the trough of social spending.” I guess that image is funny, unless you’re a Democrat.

Mr. Bunker says half of the population does not support the bill. I’m not sure about the source of that data, but, that aside, obviously half the population does support it. Right? And I’m not sure how including DACA in the bill reveals the Democrats’ “true treachery.” What’s treacherous about helping and protecting children who, through no fault of their own, came to our country illegally with their parents several years ago?

Mr. Bunker ends apocalyptically, describing the whole situation as “a dangerous government power grab.” Swell. But “let’s be honest,” that’s just not true.
