America is governed by and for all the people. This is the central tenet of a true democracy. If we wish all voices to be heard and counted, protecting voting rights has to be our first priority. Any effort to subvert the will of the people needs to be condemned by every politician. This is the only way to avoid the disconnect so many feel between the federal government and the pressing needs of the average citizen.
I was pleased to see President Biden affirm the right to vote as the number one
priority of his administration. He did so during his visit to survey the devastating tornado damage in Kentucky. That tragedy illustrated the need for federal and local partnership in the recovery efforts. It exemplifies his overall aim to build back better in all regions of the country, red, blue and purple. Partnerships are what we need in Washington right now. We need to break the logjam in Congress and negotiate in good faith. A good start would be for a voting rights bill to be passed that would benefit both parties and more importantly reflect the true majority of the American people.
