The decorated marine of the early 20th century Gen. Smedley Butler wrote that war is a racket. President Eisenhower told us to beware of the military industrial complex. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is a war crime as was Bush’s invasion of Iraq. One can make the argument that Putin was baited into this war by NATO’s continued eastward expansion after the Berlin Wall came down.
At that time it was understood that NATO would not expand one inch eastward. There are now a multitude of former Warsaw Pact nations allied with NATO. There was big money to be made by corporations selling their military toys to these nations and so our capitalist pursuit of profit has helped lead the world into today’s Ukrainian debacle. Again, this is not to condone Putin’s actions. This dangerous situation will receive much coverage for two reasons. One is because the Ukrainians are mostly white and “civilized,” as opposed to those brown skinned folk in Iraq and Afghanistan that we killed, and the other is because these events could easily lead to a nuclear holocaust.
