Congress is considering a proposal to allow the Internal Revenue Service to prepare taxes for American taxpayers. I urge all members of our Congressional delegation to oppose this expansion of IRS power for many reasons. Let’s start with the fact that the IRS can’t even do the job it’s supposed to be doing now, collecting taxes. USA Today just reported that they are starting the 2022 tax season off without processing some 6 million tax returns from 2021! I have personal experience with the incompetency of the IRS and their mistake cost me a lot of time and aggravation. Congress should be focusing on fixing the IRS not expanding its role.

This proposal raises significant privacy issues. It would allow the IRS to collect data and information from taxpayers that it currently does not have access to and could, and likely would, use that information against filers in the future.

There is an inherent conflict of interest in allowing an agency whose main goal is to collect as many taxes as possible, to file for taxpayers. Taxpayers work hard for their money and they deserve to keep as much of it as is legally possible. A government-run tax preparation service would short-change them. The current economic situation and run-away inflation are making it hard enough for small businesses and workers to make a living and take care of their families. Let’s not expand the role of the IRS to the detriment of the American Taxpayer. Kill this ill-conceived idea now.
