A historic Lake Winnipesaukee cruise ship sets sail for its 150th summer season this week.

The first ship on the lake named for Mount Washington was wooden side-wheeler the S.S. Mount Washington, launched in 1872.

The current M/S Mount Washington was originally built with a steam engine in 1940, after the original ship caught fire in 1939.

Starting with a Mother’s Day Brunch cruise on May 8, Mountain Washington Cruises will host a lineup of events throughout the summer, including an anniversary gala on Aug. 12, the date the first ship was launched. The cruise line is also celebrating the return to lake activities limited by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This ship has endured for generations, in good times and bad, and we’re excited to see her again be a place where people come to gather,  unwind and enjoy our beautiful lake,” Capt. Jim Morash said in a press release.
