Mark Flanders, of Northfield, has played pickleball for a few years. He loves the sport, and when he heard of a new indoor pickleball facility opening in Concord, he had to check it out.
Capital City Pickleballers opened its doors at in the Concord Center on Ferry St. to pickleball aficionados eager for a glimpse of its six freshly painted courts.
“I think it’s great, I do. I think it’s because there isn’t a pickleball facility that’s close by and the sport has gotten so popular. I think there’ll be a good draw for this facility,” said Flanders, a retired tennis player who found pickleball to be the best way to stay active and continue enjoying racket sports.
Flanders’s pickleball-playing wife, Janet, and friend, Steve Schaeffer, joined him to see what the new spot was all about.
“A lot of people play outdoors, but for the wintertime, it’s going to be very big over here for Concord,” Schaeffer said.
The two owners of Capital City Pickleballers, Martha Edgar and Thomas Brady, searched for the perfect space to build the indoor pickleball community they envisioned. They knew the sport’s popularity would guarantee interest from people who needed a place to play during cold months.
The space they found, formerly Seacoast United’s indoor soccer facility, has been fully transformed into hard courts for pickleball. Many other spaces they looked at had awkward supporting beams and poles or dimensions that wouldn’t allow players to maximize the space.
Edgar, who also owns Wrap City Manchester, searched for years for the right space and wouldn’t settle for less.
“For me, it’s about the community and involving as many people as I can and doing what’s best for the community,” she said.

Her husband, Brian Edgar, is a pickleball player himself. He first saw the sport in Florida and believes strongly in all the social and physical benefits that draw people to the sport. He may be the player, but Martha is the businessperson behind the new place.
“Martha came home one day and said, ‘We’re in the pickleball business,’ and I was excited,” he said. “Martha and [Thomas Brady] put in a ton of work, they worked like dogs.”
The space will be open for play on Saturday as some of the finishing touches are added. Equipped with a small pro shop with pickleball gear, paddles and other items, it will cater to every pickleball player looking to stay warm this winter.
