Every tree killed in Memorial Field
I am heartbroken and dismayed that the City of Concord would find it prudent to kill and grind to chips every single tree in Memorial Field.
One sugar maple (acer sacrum) was over 250 years old — that’s right, 250 anniversary of our country, this tree was there. White pines, many close to, if not 100 years old and in very good health and condition GONE. Not a single tree left. Why? Summer heat? Forget about shade, Go hide under the bleachers. Habitat for all kinds of birds and other wildlife, GONE! Pleasant sound of the winter wind in the pines, and evergreen breaking the dreary winter landscape, GONE!
It is bad enough that backward thinking lead to this but to compound this by chipping them, one entire tree at a time in a gigantic chipper so the chips can be dumped somewhere and rot releasing methane gas is the ultimate ignorance. The white pines were perfect for milling into lumber to build.
I hear from officials, “don’t worry, new trees will be planted.” Oh, what a relief, maybe my grandchildren can live long enough to enjoy the shade from the new trees planted. In the meantime, we will wilt in the summer. And the thing every resident wants to know, how much did it cost to remove nearly 100 trees only to plant new ones, which are of vastly lesser value? Can someone explain?
