Yesterday as I sat typing up a story in the office, I looked over at the window to see large white flakes floating down from the sky. There wasn’t even snow in the forecast, but the serenity of the scene made me smile. I’m trying to find beauty in the many parts of each season. Although I long for the warmth of sunshine to kiss my skin once more, I love the feeling of sitting at my desk, cozy with a mug of tea, watching the frigid world unfold outside.

Our office abuts the forest around Sewalls Falls. Sometimes we see wild turkeys and, on the rare occasion, a family of deer. More often, though, we get birds swooping in from different directions. And from my desk, I get to watch the evergreen trees sway in the wind. At this time of year, icicles cling to their branches and sparkle in the sunlight. I am, perhaps, romanticizing my desk job based on the view, but it’s quite lovely and brings me joy.

Rather than wanting to skip ahead to another season, I’m trying to relish the one we’re currently in. I encourage you to do the same. To that end, here are a few ideas to inject some excitement into your weekend. Hopefully, whatever you choose will help you realize that winter isn’t so bad after all!

On Friday evening, the Henniker Brewing Company is hosting Blades & Brews: Spoon Carving from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The class, taught by Owl Wilderness Survival, will teach carving skills and tool-sharpening techniques. All materials will be provided, so no worries on that front. Visit https://hennikerbrewing.com.

For dinner and some company, head to Arts Alley for Modern Diner, Old Soul Supper Club, a four-course meal served in Rose & Rye. Get someone you love to come with you, and buy tickets at https://artsalleyconcordnh.com.

On Saturday at 10 a.m., join new business Magpie Collective for a grand opening at 15 Green Street, where you will find “a curated mix of eclectic finds, vintage pieces and original designs.” Come celebrate this new addition to our community!

To connect with nature (while staying warm), venture to the Black Forest Nursery for a free veggie gardening class. Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Veggie Gardening 101 will help you start with the basics of growing plants you can turn into a salad or use to garnish your meals. No registration needed, just show up! Check out https://blackforestnursery.com for more information.

Finally, if you want to move your feet this weekend, try Contra Dancing at the City Wide Community Center from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday evening. This event is geared towards everyone — including beginners, singles and families. Visit https://concordnhcontra.wordpress.com to learn more.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
