Where Are We Going
Looking at the actions the New Hampshire Republican-controlled Legislature and Governor are taking, tells us where they want us to go. They have continued to cut state taxes on the wealthy. This includes eliminating the Investment and Dividend tax that in FY 2024 raised $184.2 million, most from just 2,100 of the wealthy. They are also cutting the Business Profit tax.
These cuts and other reduction of revenue have resulted in many cuts in social and other programs that help the average citizen. One example is the Housing Champion program to encourage towns to build affordable houses. Their reason is that the โprogram is too expensive.โ The Constitution requires the state to adequately fund public education, the Republican controlled refuse to do this. These actions result in increased local property taxes, already among the highest in the country.
They have not cut the School Voucher program which bankrolls private education for the wealthier at the expense of the rest of us. This school year, the taxpayers are funding 10,510 vouchers. Only 343 of these students came from public schools. The remaining 96.7% were already in private schools or home schooled.
These cuts in taxes and programs and funding programs like school vouchers that benefit the wealthy show us the directions Republicans are taking us. Under the Republicans, we are reducing taxes on the more well to do and increasing local taxes and not funding programs like public education. It is time to vote these Republicans out.
