A line forms to enter Rooftop Social.

It was a Friday evening in early September, the kind where the air carries the first tinges of fall but the breeze still feels warm. Pink streaks punctuated the dimming sky as the sun sunk below the horizon.

I walked downtown to meet our State House reporter, Charlotte Matherly. (She is also one of my dear friends!) Both of us buzzed with excitement — after having lived in Concord for over a year, we were about to try out the long-awaited Rooftop Social at Arts Alley.

We lucked out and got a table right away, each of us ordering a fabulous lavender drink. We sipped our cocktails and watched the sunset while reveling in the feeling of being on top of the city….quite literally! Everything feels a little more alive up there. We watched people stream into the Capitol Center for the Arts for an evening performance, just as we saw couples strolling down the sidewalk, hand in hand, and children licking ice cream cones down below with their parents.

This weekend, Rooftop Social will open again for the season, and I can hardly wait! On Friday from 4-10:30 p.m., come catch a sunset with your friends and enjoy the relaxation of watching the world below.

It’s a long weekend, so there’s a lot to do — what a wonderful problem to have!

Tonight, Barrel & Baskit in Hopkinton is hosting a free wine tasting at 5 p.m. to celebrate new wines they’re adding to their collection. Members will enjoy a paired appetizer, with non-members able to purchase the food for $5.

“Our wines are chosen with care and loved by our customers, so come enjoy some new tastes and meet our community,” the event description says.

On Friday, join Over The Moon Farmstead in Pittsfield for a comedy night at 7 p.m. The meadery and pizzaria spot promises “Great hilarious stand-up and good vibes all night long,” with performances from Jody Sloane, Rob Steen and Jolanda Logan.

Then, prepare to hit the trails on Saturday for the City of Concord’s May Group Hike at the Spears Park Trails. The adventure begins at 10 a.m. so pack a water bottle, put on your boots and get ready to go!

On a different, more somber note, Monday is Memorial Day, which commemorates those who lost their lives in service to this country. It’s a day of remembrance, a time to honor the deceased and reflect on their sacrifice.

Penacook’s annual Memorial Day Parade will be held the day prior, on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Merrimack Valley High School.

“This year, we have added a stop of remembrance at Woodlawn Cemetery where Taps will be played,” the event description says. “We’ll continue to the monument at Boudreau Square and end at Washington Street School.”
