Bluffton, SC – Bernard Walko, Jr., affectionately known as Bernie to family and friends, passed away peacefully on July 6 at age 72, surrounded by family following several serious illnesses.
Bernie was born and raised in Edwardsville, PA where he attended Saints Cyril and Methodius Church and served as an altar boy. He graduated from St. Hedwig Elementary School and West Side Central Catholic High School, Class of 1971.
Bernie was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, serving from 1971 to 1981. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorably discharged.
A talented stained-glass artist, Bernie created custom pieces for clients through his business, Appris Glass. He was also an investment banker and owner of B. F. Walko Company. Bernie had a lifelong passion for cars, especially vintage automobiles, enjoyed playing golf with his best friend, Todd Bell, and treasured time spent with his wife, family, and friends. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he loved making people laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Debra Jackson Parenteau Walko and his children, Patrick Walko, Matthew Walko, and Rebecca Walko Burdet. He also leaves behind stepchildren Bridget Parenteau Tyrrell and Richard Parenteau III along with eight grandchildren, Marcus Walko, Lukas Walko, Maggie Walko, Nicholas Walko, Kaylie Tyrrell, Meredith Tyrrell, Cameron Parenteau, Hayden Parenteau, and his mentee, Christian McCullough.
Bernie is mourned by his sister, Anne Walko Sokoloff, brother-in law Peter Sokoloff, sister-in-law Marla Walko, his nieces and nephews, and many loving friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, Anna Pchola Walko and Bernard F Walko, and his brother, Robert Walko.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held on September 13, 2026, in Bluffton, SC. He will be laid to rest with military honors at New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire on October 5, 2026.
