Hampton, where Carleigh Beriont and her family live, is home to New Hampshire’s first public school. Nearly 376 years ago, the people of that town made a simple but profound commitment: every child is entitled to an education. That promise helped build generations of educated citizens, strong communities and a thriving democracy.
Today, that tradition is under attack.
New Hampshire ranks last in the nation for state support of public education. Instead of investing in the schools that serve every child, politicians have expanded a voucher program that sends taxpayer dollars to private and religious schools. The overwhelming majority of participating families were already paying private school tuition. As the program’s costs continue to soar beyond projections, public schools lose funding while local property taxpayers are left to cover the difference.
For 376 years, New Hampshire communities have believed that educating every child is a public responsibility that serves the public good. It’s time to honor that legacy by supporting leaders like Carleigh Beriont who will stand up for public education and the families who depend on it.
