Property taxes and Free State Project
After reading the recent “My Turn” about “Dubious property tax claims,” I wish to respond.
The state legislators who authored this opinion piece, along with many other New Hampshire Republicans in state office, align closely with the Free State Project (and other like-minded activist groups, such as Americans for Prosperity). The FSP equates “liberty” with decreased taxation and regulation, which leads to more contamination in our food and water supplies, as well as decreased state funding of public education.
Less money from the state leads directly to increased property taxes at the town and city levels, as money needed to fund schools and other obligations must be secured. The people hit hardest from heavy reliance on property taxes (as well as rent payments) are those in middle and lower income tax brackets, which is the majority of us.
So check whether your state representative is working for your benefit or for the interest of more affluent citizens. The NH Liberty Alliance website rates all New Hampshire legislators according to how closely they align with the FSP. An “A” or “B” rating is not good for your health or your bottom line.
