The adventures of Bill “Hopalong” Cassidy
It has always been my hope that physicians who enter politics might bring compassion and concern for the greater good to the national stage.
Well, that lofty ideal was unceremoniously undone this past week by Republican Senators Rand Paul (R-Ky) and Bill Cassidy (R-La).
Paul, an ophthalmologist who is blinded by a maniacal crusade of revenge against Anthony Fauci, led his flock of fellow Republican conspiracy bullies to file contempt charges against one of the greatest scientists of our time.
And then Cassidy, a gastroenterologist who speaks like someone suffering from the perpetual torment of an IBS attack, was presented with the unique opportunity to partially redeem himself after casting the deciding vote to confirm RFK, Jr. as HHS Secretary. Sadly, Cassidy reprised his role as Trump’s lackey by casting the final vote required to confirm Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General.
Fireworks lit the skies over Mar-a-Lago as Jan. 6 rioters, sex traffickers and Trump family members looked forward to hefty government checks instead of prison time. Though no longer a MAGA darling, “hopalong” Bill serviced the administration while performing a disservice to his constituents, American medicine, and the Constitution. Lucrative lobbying jobs await.
These senate physicians have long since abandoned the physician code of “above all, do no harm”, replacing it with “above all, be petty, vengeful, and greedy.” Time to review the medical school curriculum.
