Hurricane prevention

Instead of trying to freeze the air, imagine enormous offshore pipes or pumping systems that bring colder deep ocean water upward, spread that water across the surface before a hurricane arrives and reduce sea-surface temperature in the storm’s projected path. That is an ocean-cooling network.

It could potentially reduce evaporation and the amount of heat/moisture available to the hurricane. It would use sensors and hurricane forecasts to target areas where cooling could have the greatest effect.

This isn’t completely hypothetical. Hurricanes themselves naturally churn the ocean and bring colder water upward. NOAA observations show that hurricanes can create substantial ocean “cold wakes,” and cooling beneath a storm can reduce its intensity.
