Communist? Socialist?

The Republicans would like you to believe that the Democrats are pushing the country towards communalism. But before you believe them, take a minute to know the actual definitions.

Britannic defines socialism as “a transitional phase where the state or workers control the economy and people may still be paid based on their labor.” Communism is “the final, fully realized stage where money, social classes, and the state itself no longer exist.”

Countries like Sweden, Norway and Canada exist as Democratic/Socialist. Workers are paid for their labor but the government controls basic services that are provided equally to everyone. Healthcare, housing, childcare, education, infrastructure and general safety. Yes, the citizens may pay a higher income tax than in the U.S. but no one must worry about bankruptcy due to a medical bill. You’ve no doubt heard that there are long waiting periods for healthcare, but I have friends that have waited months for services here in our country. We pay the highest costs of any major industrialized country for our healthcare, yet we lead in infant mortality, maternal mortality and have the lowest life expectancy.

Social security, unemployment insurance, public schools, public water and sewer, roads, agriculture subsidies, etc. These are all forms of socialism that we rely on.

No one is advocating for communism! This has been the rallying cry from the Republicans for decades. Don’t be fooled, communism isn’t the answer.
